Blimey, is it already July? June flew by, but when we look back on the month and all these Switch games, we think we have an answer to why things went so fast – it was a padding good month for video games, right? How do we ever choose the best of the best? Well, we have tried!

As always, we focus on downloadable games that we have reviewed, and as DLC and expansions – that Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and Cuphead – The Delicious Last Course – not included. But even with the ground rules established, it was still a shorter month on the eShop.

Let’s first get the honorable mentions from June 2022 out of the way, and then check out the best (and our favorite) Switch eShop games last month!

Honorable mentions:

This month was so good that we have only included games with points of 8/10 or higher. Even if they did not really get into the top three, they are definitely worth a shout out here:

Card Shark (Switch eShop)Card Shark (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Nerial

Release Date: June 2, 2022 (USA) / June 2, 2022 (United Kingdom / EU)

There are lots of card games on Switch (and elsewhere) right now, but what makes Card Shark stand out from the rest is that it is not really about playing with the cards, and it is this twist that meant it barely squeaked into our number three spot.

It is a deliciously clever puzzle that will make you shuffle decks of cards, pour drinks and try to keep your players happy while trying to help a nobleman cheat his way through the game. It is a changeable deck of cards to play with because you are always under pressure. But it is also completely funny and always keeps you on your toes.

Portal: Companion Collection (Switch eShop)Portal: Companion Collection (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Valve Corporation / Developer: Valve

Release Date: June 28, 2022 (USA) / June 28, 2022 (United Kingdom / EU)

This iconic duo has been waiting a long time for the Switch port treatment. Valve’s incredible puzzle game, announced in February and shading during the June Nintendo Direct Mini, turned out to be at home on Nintendo’s small console.

Who is surprised that this placed so high? Not us. Portal and Portal 2 has some of the best puzzles and the most fun writing in games today, and both games still feel unique years later. And the Switch port has barely any graphical connections and runs at even 60 fps in both handheld and docked modes. This is the road to play both of these games, we think.

Do you need more convincing? Our 9/10 review should do the trick.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (Switch eShop)Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Dotemu / Developer: Tribute game

Release Date: 16 June 2022 (USA) / 16 June 2022 (United Kingdom / EU)

During a stacked month of new releases, Dotemu and Tribute Games ‘loving celebration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ arcade game is outstanding. It’s hard to deny that top spot, and it definitely trampled on competition within the Nintendo Life Towers.

Shredder’s Revenge is more than just a pizza piece of beat ’em-up nostalgia from the 80’s and 90’s – it’s worth a whole pizza. Block a block with references to the show, series and games. The game’s 16 scenes are filled with enemies, buzzing with Tee Lope’s fantastic music and full of tributes to other classic fighting games. And with six-player co-op and online or local games, you will lose hours on perfect combinations and end up in chaotic quarrels. It is the tastiest pizza we could ever wish for.

How we determine our eShop chooses the top three: When we reach the end of each month, Nintendo Life staff will vote on their favorite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial staff. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a purely digital Nintendo Switch eShop title during that particular month and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review results.

The staff are then asked to vote for three matches that they think deserve to be at the top of the list; the first choice gets 3 points, the second choice gets 2 points and the third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then added together to create a top three list, where the overall winner takes the highest prize of the month.
