The Xbox 2022 series feels as desolate as it did in 2017 | Digital trends

The Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase June 12 was Xbox’s chance to prove to the gaming world that it had an incredible set of titles underway. And it does, just not anytime soon.

Redfall was previously scheduled to be released this summer, with Starfield following on 11 November. This would have given the Xbox a much-needed list of exclusive games in 2022, but they were both delayed until 2023. Now that Microsoft’s showcase is over, Xbox’s first-party portfolio 2022 feels like it could be a repeat of the company’s 2017 show: barren compared to its competitors.

What does Xbox 2022 offer?

At the showcase, Xbox announced When dusk falls July 19 release date, confirmed that 1.0 launch for Based will be in September and revealed Pentiment. Based and Pentiment both come from Obsidian Entertainment, so I look forward to checking out both of these games when they are released. Still, they are not the kind of games that excite the mainstream masses who are hungry for bestseller titles like Halo is endless, God of waror The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In that respect, the Xbox is really missing this year. Forza games are usually launched in the fall, so many expected to turn 10 Forza Motorsport to come out later this year. However, that is not the case, as Microsoft revealed during the showcase that Forza Motorsport will actually be launched in the spring of 2023. This leaves the Xbox with nothing that can be compared to Nintendo Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Sony The Last of Us Part I during the rear half of 2022.

Nintendo has had a great year Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Triangle strategyand Kirby and the forgotten land. Sony was launched Horizon Forbidden West, MLB The Show 2022and Gran Turismo 7. The Xbox has not released any compelling exclusives so far this year, and it does not look like there will be that many more during the rest of this year.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is technically an Xbox Game Studio game now that Bethesda and Tango Gameworks are owned by Microsoft. However, Sony managed to get a time-limited exclusivity agreement for the game on PlayStation 5 that lasts until at least 2023, which means that Microsoft has not let anything get in the way of console exclusivity in 2022. It is also surprising that Deathloopanother Bethesda game, was not shown given that its timed exclusivity should expire in September.

For all the efforts that Microsoft puts into advertising the Xbox Game Pass, get Deathloop on the service would have given Xbox owners something more to look forward to this fall. It will probably come sometime, but maybe it’s just that Microsoft was not ready to show it right yet. Even after the showcase, Xbox 2022 is reminiscent of one of the worst years for the platform: 2017.

A repeat of 2017?

Public perception of the Xbox really began to decline in 2017. Shell bottoman Xbox exclusive from Platinum Games, was official canceled in January. At the same time, PlayStation 4 welcomed a whole host of notable exclusive console releases during the first quarter of the year:

  • January 2017: Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, Stories about Berseria, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prolog
  • February 2017: Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh
  • March 2017: Nier Automata
  • April 2017: Person 5

It was a pretty eventful first months of the year for Sony while Xbox Game Studios was just released Halo Wars 2, so it was hard not to see how the PlayStation 4 performed much better. The second half of 2017 was a little easier for PlayStation with Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Everyone’s golfand Yakuza Kiwami. But the incredibly pre-charged first half of 2017 made this easy to overlook.

It was also the Nintendo Switch’s launch year. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was quite the launch game, with Splatoon 2 coming later this summer. Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was launched at the end of the year and really helped to get the system gaining a foothold. It will now have one monumental 2022 with games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Live a life, Splatoon 3and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

For the rest of 2017, only Xbox Game Studios was released Halo Wars 2, Cuphead, Super Lucky’s Taleand Forza Motorsport 7. Sure, these are not bad games at all. But the fact that Microsoft released another Halo spinoff and Forza game was not so good when PlayStation and Nintendo had strong lineups that year. Although Cuphead was proclaimed as a “genuine console exclusive”By developer Studio MDHR, the game was eventually released on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, as it was Super Lucky’s Tale.

Although this was the year that Microsoft released its mid-generation Xbox One X console, its exclusive overview was so awful that Super Lucky’s Tale was the “big” game to push the console’s assumption. It really was not the type of game to showcase what an upgraded console can do.

Xbox’s 2022 range of exclusive content simply does not have the best-selling energy we can expect from a first-party platform. When dusk falls and Pentiment are the only new games planned to be released this year, the Xbox calendar is reminiscent of 2017 when it did not really have much to show. It’s not the typical version of Halo, Forza and Gears of War that Xbox is known for, but at this point it actually sounds better than what we have right now.
