Focus mode in iOS 16: How to link with lock screens, create custom websites, use filters

In addition to the ability to create custom lock screens for iPhone with iOS 16, focus mode get some useful upgrades which makes it easier to set up as well as more flexible and powerful. New features include focus filters, the ability to link focus modes to specific lock screens, set a custom home page and more. Here’s a practical look at how to use focus mode in iOS 16.

Focus mode in iOS 16 provides a new design for installation and customization that makes it easier to get started and go further.

And three main new features for focus mode include linking them with your different ones iPhone Lock screens, custom home page setting and the new focus filters to make it easier than ever to keep track of what’s important.

Note: If you have not used focus mode at all, go to Settings app > Focus and press + icon in the upper right corner to set some – the new process is more seamless and intuitive.

With iOS 16 you can now:

  1. Link a focus mode to your lock screens
    • Long pressure on your lock screen> press Focus near the bottom, now select which focus mode to link to your lock screen
    • Alternatively, go to Settings> Focus> select a focus> select Select under “Customizing Monitors”
    • You can assign different focus modes to different custom lock screens and then quickly swipe between them to automatically switch focus modes
    • If you schedule different focus modes or use smart activation, your assigned lock screen will also change when it changes focus modes
  2. Set a custom home page for focus mode
    • Go to Settings> Focus> select a focus> select Select under “Customize screens” for the center option to set a custom home page
    • Now you can choose between smart suggestions for your home screen page or an existing page – then you can customize it
    • You can also set up custom Apple Watchs to be linked with focus modes
  3. Focus filter
    • Go to Settings> Focus> select a focus
    • Swipe to the bottom and press Add filters
    • Select your filters and press add once you have customized them

Link a focus mode with lock screens

This is how it looks to assign a focus mode to a custom lock screen:

Repeat the same steps to change your linked focus mode or add focus modes to other lock screens. You can also change them from Settings> Focus.

As mentioned above, a nice way to get custom lock screens to change automatically is by setting them with focus modes and scheduling or using smart activation.

Set a custom home page (home screen) for focus mode

This is a valuable feature that helps you stay focused on exactly the apps you need / want for a given focus mode – you can still access all your apps, but the only app page you will see within a set focus mode is what you sets with the custom home page.

After selecting a new suggested “Website” or existing one, you can tap “Edit Apps” at the bottom to customize it.

Tap add in the upper right corner to set it as your home screen for focus mode. You can also choose to link a face for your Apple Watch with a focus mode.

Focus filter

Focus filter support currently includes Calendar, Mail, Messages and Safari, as well as two Low Power and Dark Mode system filters.

As with iOS 15, you can still set Smart Activation for focus modes. And if you want to manually switch a focus mode on or off, the fastest way to do it anyway is by dragging up the control center and tapping the circle icon next to the focus mode.
